Job Description:
MAIN DUTIES I. Member Protections A. Ensure members are not
subjected to physical, verbal, sexual, or psychological abuse or
punishment. B. Ensure that members are to be free from unnecessary
restraint. C. Members are to be provided with the opportunity for
personal privacy. D. Follow all policy and procedures that prohibit
mistreatment, neglect, or abuse of members (report and/or
investigate all instances or suspected instances). E. Ensure the
rights of all clients (inform, due process, financial, perform
services for facility, communication, social, personal possessions,
etc---). F. Answer communications from families promptly and
appropriately. G. Notify parents/guardians of any significant
incident such as serious illness, accident, death, and etc. II.
Training: A. Participate and provide all training that enables
performance of duties effectively, efficiently, and competently. B.
Demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary to administer
interventions to manage the inappropriate behavior of clients
(proper client management, no over use or reliance on reprimands
and/or negative statements). III. Active Treatment: A. Participate
in the development of individual member program plans. B.
Participate in the interdisciplinary team process (includes
effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors,
and staff). C. Ensure that staff promote growth through all phases
of daily living by taking advantage of training opportunities and
encourage members to demonstrate maximum independence. D.
Participate in the development, implementation, and review of
training programs related to health services. E. Participate in the
interdisciplinary team meetings. F. Participate in the development
of individual program plans whether or not the member has health
care needs. G. Contribute, at all available opportunities, to the
mission of the facility to provide active treatment services. H.
Ensure appropriate participation of agency and non-agency staff in
the interdisciplinary team process to the extent appropriate. I.
Routinely intervenes on self-injurious or any other potentially
injurious behavior. J. Uses correct voice tones when interacting
with members and staff. K. All interaction is age appropriate. L.
Implement individual program plans as developed by the
interdisciplinary team regardless of the specific discipline
involved. IV. Member Behavior and Facility Practices: A.
Demonstrate policies and procedures for management of behavior. B.
Review implementation of behavioral interventions to insure that
adequate safeguards are employed and that such interventions are
not employed in a manner to cause physical injury. V. Physical
Environment/Health: A. Ensure members environment is furnished and
maintained in good repair following up as needed. B. Ensure that
staff are familiar with the use of the facilities fire protection
features and emergency plans/procedures. C. Ensure that a sanitary
environment is provided by insuring that proper infection control
procedures are developed and followed. D. Maintain a safe living
environment by following established policies and procedures. E.
Ensure member cleanliness, demonstrate proper lifting and
transporting of members and treat members with respect and dignity.
F. Registered Nurse Only: Review members' health status as
directed, 1) by direct physical examination, 2) quarterly or more
frequently as determined by need, and 3) by taking action as
necessary. G. Conduct all nursing care as prescribed by the
physician or as determined by member needs. H. Implement protective
and preventive health measures that include, 1) training staff and
members in appropriate health and hygiene, 2) control of
communicable diseases and infections, and 3) training direct care
staff in detecting signs and symptoms of illness or dysfunction,
first aid, and basic skills required to meet the health needs of
members. I. Ensure that all drugs are administered in compliance
with physician's orders and without error. J. Ensure that drugs
used by members while not under the direct care of the facility are
packaged and labeled in accordance with state law. K. Ensure that
drug administration errors and adverse drug reactions are recorded
and reported immediately to a physician. L. No members
self-administers medication until he/she demonstrates competency to
do so. M. Ensure that treatments and other nursing duties are
performed according to physician orders and accepted nursing
practices. N. All drugs and biologicals must remain locked except
when being prepared for administration. VI. General Process: A.
Maintain confidentiality of members, member records, and
conferences. B. Follow all company policies/procedures as
specified. C. Follow all procedures for lines of communication and
authority. D. Develop, maintain, and foster a positive environment
between staff/departments. E. Participate in other activities
assigned or directed. F. Follow all oral and written instructions.
G. Ensure that nurses maintain a neat/clean appearance to serve as
appropriate role model. H. Ensure that nurses and other staff
interact appropriately with members according to policies and
procedures set forth by MidStep Services and serve as appropriate
role models. I. Work daily schedule, reporting for work on time
(complete requests for time off, appropriate use of time card).
Work other shifts as assigned or directed to assure quality care of
members. J Ensure that immediate review with appropriate follow-up
and recommendation on all injury reports (member and staff). K.
Provide relevant, on-going and consistent documentation on, 1)
member response, 2) status so as to assess the members condition at
all times, and 3) services provided. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Must have a
valid driver's license and meet insurance requirements for driving.
2. Possess ability to speak and read English. 3. Must be able to
write legibly. 4. Must have no restrictions on ability to lift. 5.
Must be approved to work by the Iowa Department of Human Services
if one or more of the following exist: prior convictions, child
abuse registry report, and/or dependent adult abuse registry
report. 6. Must not be on the Medicare/Medicaid fraud registry. 7.
Must be currently registered in the state as a nurse (RN) or
licensed in the state as a practical nurse (LPN).9. Individuals
with blood borne pathogen diseases cannot be employed in any direct
care position due to risk of disease exposure to our members.All
